ITB Innovation Park Facilitates Mastery of Confocal Microscopy for Advanced Research

Bandung, dkst.itb.ac.id – Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) through the Directorate of Science and Technology Area (DKST) continues to encourage the enhancement of high-tech-based research capacity. One concrete step was realized through the organizing of a seminar entitled “Super Resolution and Live Cell Imaging Using Confocal Microscopy”, held on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the 12th Floor Seminar Room, ITB Innovation Park, Bandung Technopolis, Summarecon Bandung Area.

This activity was organized in collaboration among DKST ITB, the Center for Nanotechnology and Material Research (PPNN), as well as industry partners Nikon Singapore and PT New Module International as the official distributors of Nikon devices in Indonesia. This seminar was aimed at academicians, laboratory technicians, and researchers who require a deeper understanding of high-resolution cell imaging technology.

As the main speaker, Ernest Cheah, Application Assistant Manager from Nikon Singapore, presented the latest developments in confocal laser scanning microscopy technology, specifically the Nikon Eclipse AX-R series. This technology enables the visualization of cell structures in detail and real-time, with advantages in scanning speed, high resolution, and the ability to observe live cell dynamics.

During the session, participants not only received theoretical materials but also direct demonstrations of the equipment's usage. Through technical explanations from the Nikon team, participants were invited to understand the working principles of the confocal system, multi-dimensional image capture, as well as its potential utilization in biomedical, pharmaceutical, and other life science research.

This agenda is also part of the strategic plan for procuring confocal microscopy equipment at the ITB Innovation Park, which will function as a joint research facility based on optical imaging in the future. With the presence of this equipment, ITB's research ecosystem in the Summarecon Bandung area is strengthened by infrastructure that supports precise micro and nanoscopic research.

The collaboration among DKST, PPNN, and Nikon played an important role in organizing this agenda, both in terms of technical aspects and facility development. DKST, as the manager of the innovation area within ITB, also facilitated the integration of this activity with the development direction of research laboratories at the Innovation Park.

This activity received a positive response from the participants, consisting of researchers, lecturers, students, and laboratory technicians. In addition to broadening insights regarding cutting-edge imaging technology, this training also opened up room for discussion regarding the potential for optical instrumentation-based research collaboration.

Through activities like this, ITB hopes that more researchers and students will possess a technical understanding of imaging technology and be able to integrate it into their respective research agendas. The presence of similar facilities and training is also expected to encourage stronger cross-disciplinary research collaboration in the future.
